The latest Birchbox Review

Since it’s been a while since we’ve done a Birchbox review, and since I received a box that is right up my alley, I thought we’d take a virtual look through some of the latest samples shipped from Birchbox.  I received this box the week before last, and have had plenty of time to test the products out.  And eat the edible product, which unfortunately took much less time than it should have.

BirchBox April Review Inside

Birchbox partnered with Women’s Health last month, so of course the box had a discount card for a Women’s Health subscription. I already receive Women’s Health, it’s probably the most accessible health magazine for us ladies out there, and even if you’re not really into health or fitness, it’s interesting and fun to read.  And great for short attention spans, as most of the information is formatted into short blips and brief articles.  But there were many more goodies included in the box.  Let’s take a look!  Please note–all prices shown are from the Birchbox website.

Juice Beauty Stem Cellular Repair CC Cream – $39

Juice Beauty

The first word that came to my mind when I slathered this stuff on my face was “thick”, followed by “smelly”. But these things aren’t necessarily bad. And I had Beth’s review from her Birchbox this past January as a bit of warning. This CC Cream has a strong herbal smell going on, but it fades. By the time I was finished with my makeup routine, I wasn’t noticing it. And I think the thickness of the cream comes from the natural sunblock in it. It contains a non-nano (so it can’t absorb into your skin) zinc oxide. I have a natural sunscreen from The Honest Company that utilizes non-nano zinc for sun protection, and it has pretty much the exact same consistency. I found this cream offers pretty light coverage, and only feels thick on your skin until it dries. I still prefer the Urban Decay Naked Skin BB Cream I’m currently using, but if you’re looking for an all natural product from a company that is known for quality skincare, I would give this product a try. Check with your local health co-op or Whole Foods to see if they carry it and have samples, or at least have an open sample tube available to try.

Supergoop!® Advanced SPF 37 Anti-Aging Eye Cream – $45

Supergoop Eyecream

An eye cream is an eye cream is an eye cream, right?  Ok, not really, but sometimes I have a hard time telling the difference.  One thing I like about this cream is that it contains SPF 37, to help protect against future damage.  I wouldn’t pay $45 for this product, but that’s simply because, like I said, sometimes they all just kind of feel the same to me.  It’s nice though, good consistency and absorbs well.  No scent to speak of.

Caudalie Divine Oil – $49

Caudalie Divine Oil

This lovely dry oil absorbs beautifully.  I love that about this product.  Exotic oils are blended with antioxidant grape-seed polyphenols to keep skin hydrated.  One thing I would warn about is the scent.  It’s really lovely, if you like floral scents.  If not, it’s fairly strong.  I could smell it on myself for most of the day when I used it.  And I didn’t mind, because I like florals, but be warned.  If that’s not an issue for you, this oil makes skin super soft.  I must admit though, I’m just as enamored with Bio-Oil, which you can purchase for much, much less.

Ojon rare blend™ Deep Conditioner – $34

Ojon rare blend™ Deep Conditioner

This is a product I am actually considering dropping the cash on. The first day I used it, I let my hair air dry, as I had a hair appointment anyway, and my hair would end up wet again. Usually, my hair is a hot mess when I allow it to air dry. I have wavy, fine hair. Frizz and I know each other all too well. But the decrease in frizz after using this product was noticeable. Someone with healthy hair would only need to use this product one or twice a week. I think my hair would definitely benefit from treatment a few times a week with this conditioner. The smell is interesting, citrus and herbal at once. I really pick up cloves in the scent. Kind of reminds me of the holidays. Lots of top rated reviews of this product on Birchbox.

Elizabeth Arden Visible Difference Cleanser, Serum, and Lotion – $99 for all three

Elizabeth Arden Visible Difference

For some reason I wasn’t expecting much from these products. I’ve never used Elizabeth Arden before, so it’s not like I had an pre-prejudices, but I didn’t have any expectations. These actually ranked up there with the Ojon conditioner as my favorite samples. The cleanser was gently exfoliating, with a lovely, light soapy fragrance. The moisturizing lotion felt really light going on, but my combination skin felt sufficiently moisturized, and I really enjoyed the subtle cucumber scent. But if you’re going to try only one of these products, make it the serum. What I loved about it was the consistency; closer to a lotion than a clear, liquid gel serum. It actually felt moisturizing, which most serums that I have tried do not. Lightly scented as well, this is a serum I would pay $40 for. I think this is a perfect skin care system for sensitive skin.

Hail Merry Macaroons - $5

Hail Merry Macaroons

These macaroons aren’t for everyone.  Well, they should be for everyone, since they’re so much better for you than regular macaroons.  They have an interesting, somewhat smoky flavor to them, which is either coming from the cocoa, or the bourbon vanilla.  Regardless, these definitely have an earthy taste to them.  If you like rich, dark, earthy flavors (like super dark chocolate), these will please.  If you are sensitive to bitter though, I don’t think these would be your favorites.  I liked them, and appreciated all the good for you ingredients.  They have a texture like fudgey brownies. If you’re on the hunt for healthy alternatives to cookies and candies, don’t be afraid to give these a try.  Just remember, these little health bombs, while full of nutrients, can be chock full of calories.  Still, a much better alternative to Chips Ahoy!
